Discover the fundamental points of kendo
Kendo means “Way of The Sword” and it is a modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting which is based on traditional swordsmanship (kenjutsu) originating from the samurai class of feudal Japan. This martial art is not about aggression nor about great physical strength or hurting your opponent. It is about respecting your opponent! Did we drown your attention? When you sign up for the classes at Kendo School of New York NY you’ll start your journey. People of all ages, abilities, sizes, and shapes train in Kendo together safely and continuously face new challenges in themselves as well as against others.
Participants wear a jacket and hakama, a type of pleated skirt. Protective armor (bogu) covers the head, hands, throat and body. These targets are attacked with a bamboo practice sword called ‘shinai’, seeking to achieve a perfect, valid strike. Bear in mind that in Kendo a valid strike involves much more than just randomly hitting a target with a shinai. An attack only scores if it is intended and well executed. The accession should put pressure on the opponent. The attack should be effective and on target while the spirit stays strong during and after the strike. Most importantly body, sword and mind/ spirit must connect as one at the moment of impact. This is a fundamental concept in Japanese sword arts known as ‘Ki Ken Tai no Ichi’. In order to be achieved it requires much practice and repetition.
